Job Purpose:

A senior scientist is expected to undertake scientific research work that is of strategic importance to the growth and developmental needs of Qatar while solving problems of national challenges relating to areas of Digital Society Research or Computer-Enabled Scientific Discovery Research that will enable the applications in health, energy, environment, and computing research. The senior scientist will be able to lead scientific investigations in any one of the subject fields such as Arab Language Technologies, Internet Computing, High Performance Computing, Cloud Computing, Data Analysis or any other relevant areas that will help achieve a Digital Society status for the State of Qatar. The senior scientist is also required to supervise and train junior scientists, research associates, research assistants and technicians about research methodologies, modelling and simulation and evaluation of research results in order to ensure the highest standards of practice and research quality. Overall, the candidate must be a mature scientist with both theoretical and applied skills to monitor and propose experiments that are relevant to the mission of the QCRI.

Key Result Areas:

 Lead and conduct independent research that will make major original contributions to the research institute working as part of a team in order to create recognition of marked distinction in its area of research.
 Supervise and train junior scientists, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, research-support and administrative staff.
 Actively participate in all aspects of research projects including management and/or leadership of large research projects or teams including research related administrative functions.
 Promote relationships with external research groups.
 Prepare research proposal submissions to appropriate national and international agencies in order to secure competitive funding.
 Be responsible for the oversight of financial management of grants.
 Actively participate in research conferences and seminars in the field of expertise.
 Provide occasional contributions to the teaching programmes within Education City or Qatar within the field of expertise where needed.
 Supervise postgraduate research projects where needed.
 Produce conference, seminar papers and publications from research.
 Ensure appropriate records and documentation of research experiments, samples and specimens examined are maintained while ensuring accuracy of laboratory reports.
 Maintain expertise and awareness of current technological and scientific developments in relevant aspects of the discipline as specified in the role
 Assist in the strategic development of Qatar Computing Research Institute in conjunction with other senior staff in the Qatar Foundation Research Division
 Participate in recruitment and selection process for the Qatar Computing Research Institute
 Assist with, and where appropriate be responsible for, policies and procedures to ensure that the Qatar Computing Research Institute meets research quality objectives towards accreditation standards
 Ensure adequate levels of consumable supplies and other items required are managed and used appropriately.
 Participate in the development and implementation of new procedures within the Qatar Computing Research Institute as appropriate
 Assist with the planning and programming of the multidisciplinary research building, reviewing structural and construction requirements for the delivery of the building to Qatar Foundation Research Division
 Advice on the niche areas of development for Qatar Foundation and contribute to the development of roadmaps for research implementation
 Assist with the integration of individual projects into a cohesive overall program and coordinates with other QF Research initiatives throughout the division, the education city and nationwide
 Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
