Job Purpose:

The incumbent is responsible for managing the protection of the intellectual property portfolio developed by QCRI and its members as well as, patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and other intellectual property.

He will be also drafting of designs/inventions at QCRI and the filing of patent claims through qualified laws firms within the required region of the patent. The candidate will support for the response to any clarifications from the patent authority and the preparation of the final submission.

Key Result Areas:

 Contribute to the development of appropriate licensing strategies, including the preparation of non-confidential summaries and confidential technical information for marketing purposes; supporting the negotiation of licensing agreements; and participating, as appropriate, in the management of licensing agreements.
 Work closely with QCRI Research staff to maximize effectiveness and tracking/monitoring/reporting patent expenses consistently and reliably, supporting the identification and enforcement of trademarks and copyrights.
 Coordinate activities for the pursuit of any default license agreements, as well as the identification of and contribution to the enforcement of intellectual property rights.
 Manage all record keeping and contractual reporting obligations; invention reporting as required, and timely notification of, title to inventions.
 Provides information for QCRI intellectual property database including: patent filings, patent expenses, executed agreements and licensing revenue.
 Ensure the compliance of obligations under all intellectual property and technology-related agreements and laws; obtain and record new invention disclosures from researchers.
 Manage the protection of intellectual property rights; evaluating patentability, contributing to the evaluation of technical merit and commercial potential of inventions.
 Perform legal analysis and supporting technical analysis of inventions, contributing to the development of organizing and implementing strategies for marketing technically complex inventions.
 Support the enforcement of intellectual property rights, including monitoring for intellectual property infringement of patents, trademarks, copyrights, etc.
 Report to QCRI IP Committee any instances of alleged intellectual property infringement and provide appropriate analysis, documentation and support for litigation.
 Contribute to refinement and communication of QCRI's Intellectual Property Policy; Support the business operations and mission of the institute by providing input and advice on intellectual property policies and procedures at the Institute; and
 Educate the research staff regarding Intellectual Property Policy and institutional related policies and general process for filing, protection and commercialization of Intellectual Property at QCRI.
 Draft the invention/design in coordination with the Inventors ensuring its accuracy and using the appropriate terminology.
 Prepare claims in coordination with the Inventors related to the invention/design.
 Liaise with law firms in the filing of claims in the intended region ensuring that all required information is provided in a timely manner and all applications are accurate and submitted within the required timeframe.
 Respond to any queries/clarifications in coordination with the Inventors received from the patent authority related to the application submitted ensuring that they are submitted in the required timeframe.
 Keep abreast with new developments and recently patented computing research as well as patent laws.
 Provide recommendations on whether to proceed with patent applications as part of the IP Committee at QCRI.
